Meanwhile, the meager cash I do get mostly goes into building and improving armies. Buildings that are supposed to take 2 turns can take much longer while I'm waiting to earn the cash. So far I've been building improvements where I can, but I often get the "Queue Stalled" message because I can't afford the improvements I've got on order. Is it possible to define who you trade with, or is it just a "if you build it, they will come" sorta thing? So I'm guessing I need some port improvement. Anyway, I've noticed that all the little dotted-line trade lines have little ships traveling on them quite a bit, EXCEPT for the lines that lead to my ports. To improve this, is it as simple as just improving your port buildings? I know there's something available called a Merchant's Port or something to that effect, but I haven't had an opportunity to build one - again, because I'm always broke.

* Ports/sea trade - Someone mentioned in another thread that sea trade can be one of your greatest sources of income. I assume this is an indicator that I'm doing something else horribly wrong. * Roads - I built dirt roads in all my provinces, but the traffic on them appears kinda sparse compared to what I see in other countries while wandering around. Are there other things I should be building, or should I just put more focus on getting these things built and improved? I've never had the opportunity to build a mine. I've built and improved farmland in all my holdings once or twice, but haven't been able to go any further because I don't have any cash. * Town improvements - from what I gather, farms and mines bring you money. And speaking of map resources - do you automatically benefit from ones in your own provinces or do you need to "merchant them" as well? I'm not sure if it's true that you continue to get trade income from these, because as far as I can tell there's no way to tell which ones you "own" and which you don't. * Merchants - how exactly do you use these guys? Are you supposed to just wander around the map stepping on the various resources? Once you step on one, do you "claim" it for the rest of the game and get its trade income? I know (I think) that getting Trade Rights from the owning nation will increase the money you get from these, but it sounds like you get some money regardless. I've gone through the tutorial but haven't read much of the manual, so some of the following things may be easily answered there. I'm holding my own so far, but Portugal keeps attacking and there are some large empires like Milan who are going to be causing me trouble soon.I need to accelerate my rate of growth, and to do that I need more money. I briefly owned Jerusalem in addition, but then rebels threw me out.

After several hours of play, I own a grand total of 4 provinces (up from the 2 that Spain starts with). I've been expanding very slowly because, well, I never have any money. I recently got Medieval II and I'm playing through my first attempt at the grand campaign, as Spain.
